The story worth telling
Choose something with a beginning and an end: wrapping an order, planting a herb or repairing a button. A modest subject makes the editing decisions easier to judge. Resist using every clip simply because it took time to record.
Three things to capture
- The untouched starting point
- One clear action, without stopping the camera
- The finished result in the same setting
Let the camera run a little before and after each action. Those extra seconds give you room to find a better cut.
Give the edit a shape
Open on the finished result
Show the action that explains it
Return to the result, now with context
Before you share it
Watch it without reading the caption. If a stranger cannot tell what happened, add context before adding effects.
